How to Be a Weird Bible Reader (Part 3)

The final part in this series giving you a window into my brain.

New podcast launching TODAY

Don’t worry- Weird Stuff in the Bible isn’t going anywhere!

This afternoon, I’m going to record my first episode of a podcast looking at the prophetic books of the Bible. It’s called God and His Prophets, and generally, I’m going to try to record these episodes LIVE on Youtube on Sunday afternoons/evenings. They will post to my podcast feed on Monday mornings.

If you’d like to watch live- or just subscribe to the audio feed- you can watch at this link:

And you can find links to subscribe to the podcast format on all the major platforms right here:

And by the way- thank you to everyone who watched or listened to our previous episode, the Master Class on Spiritual Legal Rights. Even though it was a longer episode than usual- and a recap/review rather than new content- it was a record-breaking number of downloads!

For anyone who did miss it, you can watch it right here:

Today is part 3 of my series on how to be a weird Bible reader. If you want to know why you should be a weird Bible reader- and the first two ways you can be one- here are links to the first two newsletters about it:

And now, here’s the third way YOU can be a weird Bible reader as well. The third thing you must remember as you read through Scripture is:

3. The Bible is right.

This means that the Bible is true in everything it says, and that everything it tells us is for our own good.

If the Bible is always right, that means any ideas I have in my head that are contrary to what I believe in the Bible are wrong.

We all have preconceptions. These are opinions, biases, beliefs or even doctrines that we bring to the table as we read the Bible; and subconsciously, we try to make everything we read fit our preconceived ideas. Preconceptions are like filters in our minds, and we trap and discard anything that gets caught in the filter.

That means if I read something that contradicts one of my preconceptions- about reality, about theology, about what I believe is true- I should not reinterpret the Bible to fit what I already believe to be true.

If something in the Bible contradicts my preconception, it’s my preconception that’s wrong, not the Bible.

Many Christians miss treasures that are scattered throughout God’s Word because exploring them might threaten one of their assumptions or overly-simplistic ideas about God. If you want to take your Bible study to the next level, be willing to let the Bible be right about anything it says.

Don’t force the text to conform to your beliefs. Force your beliefs to conform to the Bible.

That means the Bible’s words take precedence over my filters, over my belief system, and even over my denominational affiliation.

I have a denomination I belong to. Most of you reading this probably do as well. There isn’t anything wrong with that. I’m not even saying there’s anything in the Bible that will necessarily contradict it.

What I am saying is that we shouldn’t read the Scripture through a filter of forcing it to fit our denomination’s beliefs, or any other belief systems we follow. If you read the Bible that way, you’ll only ever see what you already believe. You may still see some great things, but you’ll also miss so much more if you place those limitations on your understanding.

We always ought to approach Scripture in humility- in holy fear of its author- never trying to change it, but allowing Him to use it to change us.

Let the Bible be right in all it says- and that includes what you believe about physical and spiritual reality. Podcasts like mine will often test what you currently think to be true about what is possible- especially the relationship between the physical and the spiritual realms.

But you’ll arrive at the right conclusions if you believe God did not put anything in Scripture to confuse or trick us, that the Bible means exactly what it says, and that it’s always right in what it does say.

Everyone have a great week. Due to launching another podcast this week, I won’t have a new episode this Wednesday, but I hope it’s still weird! We’ll be back with a new Weird Stuff podcast episode on September 17.
