Infographic: The 77 Generations up to Jesus

Also: Merry Christmas!

Oops

First of all, I meant to send this out last weekend, and I got side-tracked.

Actually, first of all, I hope you had a MERRY CHRISTMAS this week!

Second of all- as I was saying before- I got side-tracked. It’s like it’s a busy time of year or something. However, in our previous episode- we discussed some of the 7s in Scripture- including the fact that Luke 3’s genealogy of Jesus has Him as the 77th generation since Adam. This lined up perfectly with a prophecy given by Enoch himself back before the flood.

To briefly recap: Enoch- seventh from Adam, and therefore the seventh generation of mankind on earth- wrote down that the fallen Sons of God (or “Watchers”) would be bound for 70 generations under the earth, and then consigned to a final judgment.

7 + 70 = 77.

I’m not sharp at math and that’s probably about the best I can do, but it checks out. That prophecy would bring us to the 77th generation from Adam- which happens to be Jesus Himself. What are the odds, right?

What did the coming of Jesus have to do with judging the Watchers? In his first epistle, Peter told us what Jesus was up to during His three days in the heart of the earth:

I Peter 3:18-20 - 18 For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit, 19 in which he went and proclaimed to the spirits in prison, 20 because they formerly did not obey, when God's patience waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through water.

Verse 19 is key: Jesus proclaimed something to the spirits in prison. What did He say? Probably that their plan to stop the Messiah by corrupting the seed of the woman had failed. Satan thought he won a victory by orchestrating Jesus’ death; he had no idea that God is the true master chess player and was 10 moves ahead the whole time. Jesus’ death on the cross set His entire creation free, now the Gospel enforces that freedom, and the Watchers were the first to hear about it.

So this prophecy of Enoch’s is actually pretty profound, and I hope it brings some new meaning to what Christmas meant. If you’d like to see how it all lines up for yourself, I have this handy infographic that maps out exactly what Luke 3:23-38 is telling us:

A few other interesting things of note on this genealogy in regard to the #7 (which, as I said in this week’s episode, is kind of God’s calling card. He does many things in 7s- or multiples of 7)…

Just about every 7 generations gives us someone of significance. For example, Abraham is #21. David is #35. There’s a Joshua at #49- Joshua being the Old Testament version of the name “Jesus” (AKA Yeshua).

Not only that, we see some Josephs showing up at #42 and #70, not to mention the earthly father of Jesus at #76.

There are probably even more interesting things you can do with 7 in that genealogy. Let me know what you find.

The Bible is cool! I hope you enjoyed this latest episode. Much of this was new information to me, and I love learning new things about how God’s Word fits together.

And once again, Merry Christmas! I have a year-end recap and a look ahead to 2026 coming on Sunday afternoon…
