Types of Spirits in the Bible

And reviewing the Enoch series

The Enoch Exploration is Finished (for now)

Hey everybody, it’s Luke again- with a quick review and then a new article posted to the website.

This week, we wrapped up the series on Enoch, which has been the longest (but I think also most fascinating) topic we’ve dove into on the show.

I had been teasing this series since 2024, but I knew it would go deep once we finally got there, so I had put it off for a while.

While my original goal was the cover the first 36 chapters of Enoch (known as “The Book of the Watchers”), I ended up tapping out after chapter 16. Why? Well…

1- chapter 16 is a great stopping point.

2- Even though we didn’t get through half of the chapters, by word count, we covered the majority of the material in The Book of the Watchers.

3- I have SO MANY AWESOME THINGS I want to share before the end of this year.

So stay tuned! I plan to blend more Enochian elements into future episodes.

Some of my favorite lessons this year included:

  • Do We Get a New Name in Heaven?

  • The Days of Jared (which came with this nifty infographic)

  • A Goat for Azazel

  • What Happens When You Bind a Spirit

  • “Because of the Angels” in I Corinthians 11:10

That last one is mainly because it gives me an excuse to share this meme:

And now to get to today’s headline news:

Types of Spirits in the Bible

This is a new article posted to the website. Similar to my other recent article on Named Spirits in the Bible, this is a catalog of spiritual entities classified by their function or effect on people.

I attempted to include all of the types of spirits that we find in Scripture- but if you see something I forgot, feel free to let me know! Here’s a few examples of what you’ll find in this article:

Spirit of Fear

II Timothy 1:7 (NKJV) – For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.

This is likely the same type of spirit that was unleashed when the King of Moab sacrificed his own son. He did this as part of a pagan ritual to summon help from the demonic world.

II Kings 3:27 – Then he took his oldest son who was to reign in his place and offered him for a burnt offering on the wall. And there came great wrath against Israel. And they withdrew from him and returned to their own land.

Spirit of Error

II Timothy 1:7 – We are from God. Whoever knows God listens to us; whoever is not from God does not listen to us. By this we know the Spirit of truth and the spirit of error.

In this verse, Spirit of truth is capitalized- referring to the Holy Spirit. A spirit of error is a spiritual entity which tries to direct us down the wrong path. The Greek word for error here is plane (pronounced plan-nay) and means to wander or stray. It can also be used to pervert the way that is right.

Spirit of Antichrist

I John 4:3 – …and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you heard was coming and now is in the world already.

II John 1:7 (KJV) – For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist.

The Antichrist is not just a person; there are also antichrist spirits that precede his appearance (I John 2:18). These spirits inhabit people and cause them to deny that Jesus was the Messiah, that He appeared in the flesh (II John 1:7), and/or denying Trinitarian theology (I John 2:22).

Personal Prayer Request

One more thing I’ll mention- I have a minor surgery scheduled for early Monday morning. If you read this email before then, I’d appreciate it if you could send up a prayer for me today that everything goes well. It’s a pretty routine surgery, so I’m not too worried, but I’d appreciate your prayers immensely that all goes well and that I can get back to regular life without any complications. Thank you (and God bless you for reading all the way to the end!)
